I've changed my mind about...

Up to two days ago I was saying there was no point to proceeding with impeachment against Bush and Cheney they only have 18 months to go why  bother. I see myself as a person of reason, what's the point? What a big difference a couple of days make. In that short time Congress has tried to flex its muscle in trying to find out if the White House or the Republican machinery were involved in any criminal activities i.e. obstruction of justice resulting in the US Attorney Generals firings most notably US Attorney Iglesias.

Each time Bush & Co has turned their noses at Congress knowing that there is no way the congressional branch can get the executive branch to comply. The contempt of congress citation is useless a US Attorney prosecutes it, which the US Attorney has already responded that he will not,"Brian A. Benczkowski, principal deputy assistant attorney general, cited the department's "long-standing" position, "articulated during administrations of both parties, that the criminal contempt of Congress statute does not apply to the president or presidential subordinates who assert executive privilege." http://dzarkhan.wordpress.com/2007/07/25 /house-democrats-push-contempt-citations /]. Their really is no other way for congress to enforce it's will at the moment. So were does this leave congress, inherent contempt I guess. It would be interesting to see that play out.

Dems are also calling for a special counsel to investigate it Gonzales lied, but even that is up to Bush to decide and we already know what his decision will be. This attempt at obstruction of justice is big and the paper trail is huge. How do you get to a liar who is protected by a president? It would seem trivial if it were just that one liar, but there is surfacing evidence that Bush & Co may have been involved in other illegal activities i.e. targeting a specific group of voters (African Americans) in FL and Ohio and who knows where else during the 2004 elections a tactic known as Voter Caging was used by the republican party and may have been approved by the White House (after Bush was appointed to the White House in 2000 they did not want a repeat). This was the highlighted in a NOW piece on pbs.org. This a must see http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/330/index.h tml. video. http://www.pbs.org/now/shows/330/video.h tml

I came away from that news piece thinking that this White House thinks they are above the law, and in many ways they are. The only option is for this country to impeach Bush and Cheney. You can't impeach one without the other. I had how Samuel L. Jackson put it 'what alcoholics call a moment of clarity". The integrity of the congress and the White House is at stake. Congress is at risk of becoming a speed bump. This point is protecting this country from the tyranny of the few.

Impeachment is a waste of time , it will take forever and it will stall our already stalling agenda. Dems will lose in 08 if they go down that road.

I agree that Bush and Cheney have gone well beyond acceptable behavior. And I agree that impeachment would be a waste of time. I feel that Bush is going to push this executive privilege thing all the way to the Supreme Court. If they side with him then I think there will be no other recourse but impeachment.

I also used to feel that impeachment was a waste of time.  But I'm more inclined now to think that it is necessary in order to provide a rebalancing between executive and legislative power.

If there is no justice for their transgressions what lesson does the set up for future proponents of their particular brand of lawlessness?

I'm looking forward to viewing the voter caging video from NOW.

The purpose would not be to remove Bush because that would take 67 votes. The purpose would be to investigate and get answers holding this White House accountable.

Re: I've changed my mind about... (none / 0)

I think that removal from office or any other kind of "punishment" is an open option until the investigation is concluded.  For example I would love to see what would happen if Cheney got connected to the voter caging evidence or something worse.  Would all repub congressmen really protect him from conviction?

And is there also not some possibility that an investigation could turn up something resulting in criminal charges?

But for me the impeachment itself is a form of justice (in the broader sense) for how they will be regarded in history.

It's just so awful.  I never thought, in this day and age, something like this could happen in our country.  I knew he would be the worst President ever, but not this bad.  Bush Senior at least had a sort of dignity and integrity to himself- I thought Bush Junior at least loved his father enough not to ruin his legacy as well but he doesn't even seem to care about that.
